Successful CIOB Graduation Event in Belfast
A Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) graduation ceremony took place recently in Belfast City Hall. One Fellow and 45 Members were joined by Peter McReynolds – Deputy Lord Mayor, as well as Rebecca Thompson FCIOB – Past President of the CIOB, Caroline Gumble – Chief Executive of the CIOB, and Ivan McCarthy FCIOB – Trustee of the CIOB. The Belfast Hub committee were also on hand for the occasion, with Gary Blair FCIOB, Chair of the CIOB Belfast Hub leading the ceremony.
The day had a theme of celebration, both for the individuals graduating and for the industry that they help to develop. Caroline Gumble recalled a quote by Winston Churchill, who was an Honorary Fellow of the Institute, “We make our buildings and afterwards, they make us. They regulate the course of our lives.”
The graduates’ families and friends were on hand to cheer them on, as they accepted their certificates.
Rebecca Thompson FCIOB spoke about being a ‘why’ person, “The CIOB is here to change the industry, make it more diverse and inclusive to enable the most competent leaders to succeed. Buildings are about the people that use them, they should be accessible, safe, high quality, and environmentally friendly. Hopefully, you want to be a part of the change. Today is only the start of your journey. Today you have a choice; you can do your how and what, or you can challenge ‘why’ and get involved in your local committee, become a Trustee, or even President.”
