GLIDEVALE PROTECT DELIVERS TOTAL ROOFING, WALL AND VENTILATION PACKAGE FOR BELFAST HOUSING DEVELOPMENT
SpecifyMagAdmin Posted On May 18, 2022

Leading building materials manufacturer, Glidevale Protect, has provided a full range of roofing, ventilation and construction products as part of a major new social housing development in Belfast, which is taking a fabric first approach to building healthy, sustainable homes.

One of the largest mixed tenure developments to be constructed in Northern Ireland to date, the new scheme for a leading social housing provider includes 244 homes, which are a mix of social and affordable housing, a community facility, a linear park and a children’s play park.

Working with main contractor Kevin Watson Group, established Belfast-based roofing subcontractor Prentice Roofing and offsite manufacturers and installers of the timber frame panels Leadon Timber Frame, Glidevale Protect delivered a complete solution of products to improve thermal efficiency and airtightness as well as minimizing  condensation risk by introducing natural ventilation into each building to help create healthy homes.

Products supplied and installed on this development included the Protect VP300 vapour permeable pitched roofing underlay which was teamed with Protect Fulmetal RediRoll, a universal dry fix ventilated ridge and hip system, alongside tile vents for the roof. Glidevale Protect also supplied Protect TF200 Thermo for the external timber frame walls – a low emissivity, insulating reflective membrane and the non-reflective external breather membrane, Protect TF200, was used on spandrel panels. These provided weather protection during the construction as well as helping to avoid interstitial condensation risk within the wall construction. Cavity trays, airbricks and loft access hatches from Glidevale Protect completed the project.

Cornelius Ward, director at Kevin Watson Group said: “In order to deliver the highest quality standards to meet client’s expectations, we like to collaborate with supply chain partners who can ensure our sub-contractors are provided with top performing building

MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY, NUI
SpecifyMagAdmin Posted On May 18, 2022

Project:                 Maynooth University NUI

Products Used:    Welded Masonry Support, Brick Slip Lintels, B.O.S.S. & Brick Slip Soffit Panels

Architect:              Heneghan Peng Architects

Contractor:           JJ Rhatigan

NUI Maynooth Phase 1_Maynooth_Student_Halls_IG-8_6594hi

Overview:

In order to ensure a stunning brick building design translated into a reality, IG Masonry Support was called upon to supply a range of its market-leading brick systems that hit the mark on brick detail.

Maynooth University is a fast-growing higher education institution offering world-class teaching and research. A constituent of the federal National University of Ireland, Maynooth University specialises in the Arts, Celtic Studies and Philosophy, Science and Engineering, and Social Sciences.

Student accommodation is a top factor when it comes to health and wellbeing. Maynooth University’s new residential quarter will assure just that, providing three new blocks each comprising four-nine storeys. The purpose-built courtyard apartment complex has significantly expanded the capacity of student accommodation on campus, offering rooms of varied specification to suit a variety of needs.

The intricate brick elements and large areas of brick soffits featured throughout the development required IG Masonry Support’s full catalogue of prefabricated components. IG Masonry Support designed bespoke brick slip systems for each application, providing practical solutions that enabled contractor JJ Rhatigan to save installation time significantly.

The Challenge

A key element of the architect’s vision was covered walkways with deep brick soffits, connecting the different elements of the modular design. Each walkway contained swathes of exposed brick soffits, some in excess of 33m2.

Achieving the large soffits using formwork would have been impractical, time consuming and would have required the skill of a highly-trained craftsperson. As a market-leader of quality prefabricated systems, IG Masonry Support was able to supply a more effective soffit panel solution.

As per the architect’s brief, the tapered brick reveals are another common feature throughout the façade, introducing a contrast in brick type. IG Masonry Support considered the integration of the two brick elements during the design process, which negated the need for brick cutting onsite – an intricate process that can be made easier through offsite prefabrication.

The Solution

For the large areas of exposed soffit throughout each walkway, IG Masonry Support supplied its interlocking soffit panels. Where traditional methods would have used the ‘full brick’, IG’s lightweight brick slip panels are a lighter alternative, utilising 25mm brick slips to reduce the weight of the installation.

Supplied in 1/2m2 panels, on installation the system was quick and easy to use and removed the requirement for mechanical lifting. The result was a continuous brick soffit with seamless interlocking components – an aesthetic IG Masonry Support was able to bring to life.

Furthermore, a 10mm soft joint was provided around the perimeter to allow for movement. IG’s Brick Slip Lintels were designed to accommodate the chamfered side return beside each window opening.

The utilisation of IG Masonry Support’s prefabricated components ensured that all installation was undertaken efficiently, resulting in onsite cost savings and increased productivity.

From a practical and visual perspective, IG’s solutions covered all bases, playing a core role in the creation of a striking student accommodation quarter that will look good long into the future.

NI company develops system to prevent dangerous driving at roadworks sites
SpecifyMagAdmin Posted On May 10, 2022

A Northern Ireland security technology company has created a new traffic management system to stop dangerous driving at roadworks sites, protecting the lives of construction workers.

Envision Intelligent Solutions developed Roadscan, a completely wireless stand-alone unit that records traffic breaches, capturing the driver’s number plate in real time providing information that is compliant and can be used as evidence.

The new system can also act as a deterrent as drivers see the cameras recording traffic offences and may reconsider running a red light.

Phillip Murdock, Envision IS Managing Director, explained: “We work extensively with the construction industry in the UK and Ireland and contractors were asking us for a wireless solution that allowed them to remotely view road construction sites in real time and capture anything that endangered their workers.”

The small unit, designed to be easy to deploy, provides site managers with real-time access so they have an overview of operations and safety compliance at all times. Footage is securely encrypted then stored to the cloud for playback and is compliant as evidence for any traffic violations or abuse of construction staff by drivers.

Amanda Campbell, Envision Commercial Director, explained: “We developed and manufactured this new product at our Craigavon base and it’s a tribute to our team’s flexibility and engineering skills. Roadscan is an example of how we rise to the challenges set by our customers and find a tech solution that helps keep people safe.”

The unit has undergone on-site testing at road sites in the Republic of Ireland and is now being considered for use by Greentown Traffic Management. Greentown, which has offices in Fermanagh, Lisburn and Dundalk, plans to offer Roadscan as an option to their public and private sector clients.

William McAleese from Greentown Traffic Management said: “Our clients prioritise the safety of their workers and roadside construction can hold specific dangers, particularly if drivers don’t obey temporary traffic signals. We see Roadscan as a great way for construction teams to monitor their sites and the camera will be an excellent deterrent for anyone thinking of driving through a red light or stop sign.”

Envision, set up in 2011 as a netcentric technology interfaced security company specialising in construction and manufacturing industries, was recently acquired by US firm Johnson Controls, a global leader for smart, healthy and sustainable buildings.

Donaghadee Motte Reopens to the Public after £300K Investment
SpecifyMagAdmin Posted On May 10, 2022

Donaghadee Motte has reopened to the public at weekends, from May until September, following the restoration of the former Gunpowder Store.

Known locally as ‘The Moat’, the much-loved Donaghadee landmark has been conserved and restored under the Donaghadee Townscape Heritage Initiative, with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and match-funding from Ards and North Down Borough Council.

It was originally constructed by the Anglo-Normans in the late 12th century. It was around 1821 that a picturesque castle was built on top of the Motte and used as a gunpowder store to store explosives during the building of the new harbour. The Motte is one of the largest in Ulster.

The Gunpowder Store is now home to the only accessible ‘camera obscura’ in the country, which means ‘dark room’ in Latin. It is an ancient optical device that lets light in through a small opening on one side and projects an image on the other. The camera obscura housed within the Gunpowder Store is fixed to the lower roof of the building and projects an image from the daylight through a 400mm wide upstand onto a table located inside.

The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Mark Brooks, said:

“We are really excited to have reopened Donaghadee Motte and were delighted to see so many visitors during its opening weekend. The Motte is steeped in history and reflects the rich culture and heritage of the town. The project represents a considerable investment of more than £300k in Donaghadee and it is thanks to this investment that the future of this historical site has been secured for generations to come.”

Angela Lavin, Senior Investment Manager at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said:

“We are thrilled to support the preservation of Donaghadee Motte as part of a £1million investment in the townscape. Thanks to National Lottery players, this re-opening strengthens the community by helping local people better understand their heritage and history. Donaghadee is home to fascinating heritage and we know it is a great way of bringing people together and creating a sense of pride of place, that in turn can deliver wider economic benefits.”

Donaghadee Motte is open to the public every weekend from 10am – 4pm (closed for lunch from 12.30pm – 1.15pm), from May until September. Admission is free. A maximum number of six visitors are permitted at any one time. For more information, go to visitardsandnorthdown.com.
