In 1969 Ridgeway Plant Company Ltd acquired its name from their first location at Ridgeway Street, beside the Lyric Theatre in Belfast.
In 1972 the company transferred to Diamond Gardens in Finaghy, then in 1987 on to a prime purpose built site in Boucher Road, which at that time was the centre hub for transport links to all areas of the province.
During this time the company also created depot locations in Chelmsford, UK and Dublin, Ireland. Improvements in the local transport infrastructure and a new developing Belfast offered Ridgeway the chance to relocate to superb ‘drive through’ style premises on Airport Road West in 2004.
In 2016 Ridgeway opened a new depot in Ashbourne, County Meath, further strengthening the supply chain to the construction, engineering and manufacturing industries throughout Ireland. Complete with a call-in trade counter and experienced staff, the new depot offers the same services and product ranges as our Belfast operation and provides a centrally-located hub for fast Ireland-wide delivery.
These progressive moves represent the steady, sustainable growth that Ridgeway have shown for over 40 years ensuring that the best facilities, location and service are available for their customers.

It was a remarkable year, 1947. Albert Browne started business as Browne & Day in Claudy where he employed only 2 people, even the language was different way back then.
‘Going on a trip’ was seeing the Donegal highlands from a Lough Swilly bus, a ‘Chip’ was something that accompanied fish and ‘rave’ was what someone did with a high temperature.
Petrol was the equivalent of 7p a gallon, ‘Gaughoo’ won the Grand National at 100-1 and Londonderry boasted six cinemas. The winter was horrendous and long lasting, people walked across the Foyle to work, so thick was the ice, and Albert Browne decided to build a garage in Claudy.
With building materials so scarce in the wake of the second world war, Albert enlisted the help of his brother-in-law, Peter Day, who presented him with a permit to obtain the rudiments for building construction, cement, timber, glass, iron etc which he received from the goverment, after fighting in the war.
This alliance of convenience was the foundation for the name of the Firm, ‘Browne and Day’.
A significant development took place in 1949 when a Ford tractor representative suggested to Albert that he should apply for the franchise to sell Ford cars. Shortly after the conversation, a delegate from Ford Motor Company arrived, the formalities were quickly dispensed with and so began an association with the Ford Company that has cemented the image of both in NI, and has kept the name Browne and Day to the forefront in local motoring for well over half a century.
The first car Albert sold was a Ford model Y at a cost of only £100. 60 Years on we are a thriving business where we now employ over 20 staff in out new state-of-the-art showroom and workshop facilities which were newly built in 1986. The premises were then revamped in 2006 to cater for the expanding car market and latest technolgy where we are now selling over 500 new and used cars every year.
Sperrin Metal Storage Solutions was first established in 1963 by the parish priest and a committee of local business people to provide employment in the Draperstown area.
Just two years earlier in 1961 the International Union of Railways signed an agreement on the use of a “standardised or exchangeable pallet” among railways. This was a response to the surge of freight traffic on European railway networks since the early fifties, post World War II. Along with changes to practices at port facilities and the development of the fork lift truck, palletisation revolutionised material handling and distribution worldwide.
The vision of those pioneers in 1963 led to company that has grown to become one of the leading storage manufacturers in Britain and Ireland. The company oversees whole process through it’s various departments, from the design and manufacture through to the installation and after sales care.
Now a family owned company, Sperrin Metal exports pallet racking and other metal storage products throughout Europe and the Middle East as well as being a leading supplier in the UK and Ireland.

We pride ourselves in delivering a top class service offering our customers the largest choice of tyres in stock. You can be assured that we have something to suit your vehicle and your budget.
In 2015 Modern Tyres celebrates 50 years in business, started back in 1965 by Jimmy Byrne the company is still family owned and run today.
Jimmy Byrne started Modern Tyres in 1965 when he opened his first retail / wholesale tyre depot in the Old Railway Yard in Enniskillen. Over the years, as his four son’s & daughter entered the business allowing Jimmy time to identify opportunities within the tyre retail sector, sites where purchased in various prominent towns throughout Northern Ireland and the eldest son’s left home to run these depots
As the company expanded Modern Tyres made its first major acquisition by purchasing Ards Tyre Service in Oct 1995, after the success of this came further acquisitions in Belfast, Holywood, Lisburn, Larne, Ballymena bringing the total number of depots to 16. Around this time Modern Tyres recruited a financial controller James McKee from Local accountancy firm Grant Thornton, who had managed Modern’s accounts for many years, and a general manager Charles Corscadden from Bridgestone who had over 25 years’ experience in the tyre industry.
The time was coming for something big and it came in Aug 2002 when Modern purchased the Northern Ireland arm of U.K. giant Motorway Tyre & Exhaust centres. This was the largest single purchase of tyre depots in Northern Ireland history, making headline new across the province.
Further acquisitions were made in Belfast, L’Derry and Strabane during 2003 to 2005. However in 2012 the opportunity to take over the last three remaining ATS branches in Northern Ireland presented itself giving us a total of thirty branches.
As a company we have always wanted to move into the South of Ireland and in 2013 that opportunity came our way when Hanover Tyres cameo on the Market. With ten locations spread from Dublin to Cork it took our tally of depots to forty.
These acquisitions have made Modern Tyres into a Nationwide network of forty retail fast-fit centres and a Southern Ireland tyre wholesale company, making it the largest independent tyre retail / wholesale company in Ireland.
